November writing challenge day 19

Hello, my lovely writing friends! Tonight I met with my long-time writing group (we have been meeting for about eight years?), and it was nice to catch up, get inspired, and go over projects.

It did wipe me out, however, and I didn’t have enough gas left for my writing challenge tonight.

No, I didn’t fail the challenge… I did put in my 60 minutes! But the words weren’t coming. Instead I did a bit more research. It’s been about 10 years since I personally have flown or even been in an airport, and because the first scenes of the book take place in an airport–Newark Liberty International Airport to be exact–I wanted to familiarize myself with how things worked nowadays.

In fact, I haven’t flown in or out of Newark since I was in my early 20s, and I’m in my 40s now. And like I mentioned earlier, the last time I flew, I believe it was out of my small regional airport, and into San Fransisco International Airport. That was for a business trip, and it happened about 10 years ago. Crazy that I haven’t been on a plane in soooo long.

So tonight I googled videos of Newark’s terminal, the drop off lanes, etc., and started picturing my characters in that environment. The street view on Google Maps really is amazing…and addicting! It’s such an amazing tool.

Also…a few blog posts ago I mentioned how I wasn’t sure if I was going to write this story in 3rd person or 1st person POV.

Right now, my reading habit is to find a romance author or romance series I like on Kindle Unlimited, and then to binge read all the things by said author, or said series. Much of the new, current self-published romance writing I have been reading has been first person, and seems to be much more accepted now in romance writing than it used to be. But I also looked at some current Harlequin releases, and they were still in solid 3rd person…some were deep 3rd person POV, switching between the hero and heroine at chapter breaks, and some were a the old-school, head-hoppy, more distant 3rd.

I like both styles, but I usually write in 3rd, and I think that’s where I am going to stay for now. Especially since it will be easier to write more narrative details from a distance, and I can see a couple places where I have already jotted down some notes to do that in my scene sketching.

And with that decision made, I will sign off for the night. I hope that you crushed your writing goals today.
