November writing challenge day 26

Hello, writing friends. Today I spent my evening doing research. I went down quite a few rabbit holes, too, and spent about 2 hours looking things up.

I probably do way too much research, but a) I enjoy learning about things and my curiosity is a bit out of control and b) I prefer books that don’t superficially gloss over detail, but delve in with color and granularity.

For example: If a I am reading a cozy mystery set in a small town, I want to know all about that small town. Because my hero is facing a big change due to his work, I need to know what it is he does, and how it will affect him. And I know nothing about running hotels or a big, international corporation. I don’t need to know EVERYTHING, but I need to at least know a few realistic details to really understand how and why it matters to him and his family.

Also, I hope to write the sequel about his older brother, and so this research now is killing two birds with one stone. In fact, all these secondary characters that will be in the hero’s and heroine’s orbits might make good series fodder. I love reading series books. Although, let’s be realistic here–as slow as I am going at this point, a series is a far off fantasy. 😀 But you never know. Right now I have challenges that are keeping me from writing as fast as I want, but that might not always be the case. In any event, it’s fun to think about and plan. And if writing isn’t fun, then why are we doing it? 😀

Anyway, I enjoyed my poking around the internet tonight, even though it killed my browser since I had too many tabs open. LOL.

I hope you had a good writing day. It’s almost Thanksgiving here in the US. I hope you all are not too stressed out wrapping up your week before the holiday officially starts.
